I can’t sign in

There are three ways in: an email address and a password, Sign in with Apple, and Sign in with Google. You picked one when you made your account, and that is the one that opens it. The sign-in screen marks the one this phone used last.

Pressing a different button makes a new, empty account. &mote notices and says so rather than showing you a blank year. Sign out, go back, and use the button you started with. Nothing is lost while you work out which one it was.

Forgotten your password? Type your email address on the sign-in screen and tap “Forgot your password”. A link comes to that address and lets you set a new one. This is also how you set a password for the first time, if your account is old enough to have been made without one.

If you used Apple’s Hide My Email, we never see your real address and cannot recognise you by it later. Sign in with Apple again on a new phone and your year is there.

A connection code won’t work

A code lasts 24 hours and works once. If it has run out, ask for a new one.

The page says the same thing whatever went wrong, on purpose: a page that told the reasons apart would be a way to test codes. The usual ones are that the code has expired, has already been used, or was mistyped. A code can also be tied to one email address, in which case it only works for the person it was sent to. You cannot use your own code. One person can share their light with three people at a time, and you can see up to five lights.

Locking &mote

Under Account and settings, in Privacy, turn on Unlock with Face ID. &mote then asks before it shows your year, when the app opens and when it comes back after a while away. Your device passcode is the fallback.

This is separate from your journal passphrase. The lock guards the door; the passphrase is what keeps your notes and recordings unreadable to us.

I’ve forgotten my journal passphrase

Your moods and your year are unaffected, on every device, and you can carry on logging.

The journal itself cannot be recovered. It is encrypted with a key made from your passphrase, which is never sent to us and never stored. There is no reset link, because a reset link would mean we could read your journal.

If you made a recovery key when you set the journal up, use it: the unlock screen offers “I have my key”, and it opens the same journal.

Without one, the unlock screen offers “I’ve forgotten my passphrase”. That starts a new journal and deletes the old notes and recordings, which cannot be undone even if the passphrase comes back to you later. Every day you have kept stays as it is.

Turning Health or the weather off

Health. The switch lives in Apple’s Health app, because that is where iPhone keeps it: Health, then Sharing, then Apps, then &mote. Turn off anything you would rather &mote did not read. None of it was ever sent to our server, so there is nothing on our side to delete.

The weather. Open the insights door in the bar at the bottom of your year, and tap forget the sky. What came back is deleted there and then. Turning it on again looks those days up afresh.

Why it asked about my age and sex

They come from Apple Health with everything else, and only if you filled them in there. They are read because a reading means different things at different ages, and because something like using a wheelchair changes what every movement figure means.

Your birthday never leaves Health. &mote turns it into a five year band, “35 to 39”, and throws the date away. All of it stays on your phone. You can refuse any of it in Health and keep using everything.

A voice note won’t transcribe

Transcription always happens on your phone, never on a server. &mote uses the offline model iOS provides and refuses to transcribe over the network. If your language has no offline model installed it says so rather than sending your recording away. Downloading it is done by iOS, not by us: Settings → General → Keyboard → Dictation, and choose your language.

There’s no sound

There is a mute in the bar at the bottom of your year. &mote also follows the ring/silent switch: on silent, the mood chords are silent too.

The movement is too much

Turn Gentle motion off under Appearance. Everything still happens; it arrives instead of moving. &mote follows your system Reduce Motion setting on its own, so if you have already asked for less motion there, this is already off.

Taking your data, or deleting it

Export your year and Download journal are both under Account and settings. The journal downloads decrypted and readable.

Start fresh erases every day you have kept. To delete your account and everything attached to it, write to privacy@andmote.com.

What is kept, and what we cannot read

The short version: your moods are stored so the mosaic can be assembled and synced. Your journal notes and voice recordings are encrypted before they leave your phone, and we cannot read them. The privacy policy says exactly what falls on which side of that line, and consumer health data covers how your moods are treated as health data.
